Shane Wilcox, Percussion Instructor
Passionate and extremely driven towards music education, Shane has been involved with music since age 5 when he picked up a pair of sticks and took some informal lessons on rock/pop music — he was hooked! This led to years of musical exploration and he eventually joined his middle school music program. His participation continued into high school where he sought every opportunity to grow in his musical education. He immediately joined the marching band and was the lead snare player by his sophomore year. He was also heavily involved in the jazz ensemble as the sole drum set player. In addition to spending four years in marching band, jazz ensemble, and symphonic band, he also participated in the select choir during his senior year. Shane worked diligently to hone his craft and was able to receive honors such as the John Phillip Sousa Award for musical excellence and leadership. He also received multiple awards for his Jazz solos. During the summer of 2006, and again in 2007, Shane studied at the Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts to further his understanding and performance of jazz music under the direction of many master musicians and industry professionals. In 2010 he began working with the Twentynine Palms High School Marching Wildcats as their Percussion Instructor. In 2013, after three very successful years at TPHS, he was offered the opportunity to become the Percussion Caption Head at Yucca Valley High School. He has built the YVHS Percussion program into an award-winning portion of the YVHS Music Department. Shane plays drums and percussion locally when the opportunity arises whether with a local jazz ensemble or musician, accompanying a choir group, or playing for musicals. Shane and his wife Sarah live in Joshua Tree, where they do their best to keep up with their very busy schedule and lifestyle.
